Meredith Emerson is my hero. Even in death, she symbolizes the strength of victims caught in horrific circumstances who employ every means possible to fight back.
Emerson, as you may know, was brutally murdered by a piece of human scum named Gary Michael Hilton. There’s no doubt that she became a victim, as many do, simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In this case, Emerson’s and Hilton’s paths crossed while she was hiking with her dog in the north Georgia mountains on New Year’s Day. The reason he gave for choosing her as his next victim: “because she was a woman.”
(Makes you want to throw up, doesn’t it?)
At first, Hilton, 61, pretended to befriend Emerson, 24. They talked and walked together. He couldn't keep up, and she split off on her own. He waited in ambush, threatening her with a knife. The reason I’m so proud of Emerson, a graduate of the University of Georgia, is that she immediately fought back. Hilton told police that Emerson grabbed at his knife and baton. “She wouldn’t stop,” Hilton said. “She wouldn’t stop fighting and yelling at the same time. So I needed both to control her and silence her.”
How did he control her? He pummeled her with his fist so hard that he blackened both her eyes, broke her nose, and his hand. But Emerson still didn’t give up. For four days, he kept her captive, telling her he only wanted her money. She bought time by playing a cat and mouse game, continually giving him the wrong PIN number for her ATM card. “She was doing everything she could to stay alive, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan, has said. “It’s not something you can train for. Instinct kicks in… She nearly got the best of him.”
Hilton finally told her he would release her. Instead, he tied her to a tree, made himself some coffee, and then untied her and cracked her skull with a car jack handle. Afterward, he decapitated her corpse. But hey, Hilton insists he’s an old softie; he couldn’t bring himself to kill Emerson’s dog.
A true piece of human debris, Hilton has pled guilty to Emerson’s murder in return for a life sentence without the death penalty. Meanwhile he’s under suspicion in the deaths of a North Carolina couple and indicted in Florida for a similar murder, that of a woman named Cheryl Dunlap whose decapitated body was found in the woods last December. In that case, the death penalty is still on the table.
A decade ago Hilton helped produce and came up with the plot of a horror movie named “Deadly Run,” about a serial killer who hunts women in the woods. Emerson must have had her attacker sized up. From the moment he attacked, she undoubtedly understood that he would kill her, and she fought back with every ounce of strength and cunning she could muster. I remember back in the seventies, when I was coming of age, and women were advised not to fight an attacker/rapist, to ride out whatever happened in hopes that they’d stay alive. “Don’t risk angering him,” experts warned. Now we know most rapists are passive/aggressive and fantasize about control. When a woman fights, they usually flee.
Still, there are those, like Hilton, who don’t give up. How do we know what to do if we’re ever under attack? According to the statistics, we’re almost always better off fighting back and using whatever means we have not to be abducted. The majority of victims removed from the original site of the attack are found dead.
Although it could be argued that it would have been wiser to have a walking companion or pick a more heavily traveled route, once Hilton confronted her, Emerson did exactly the right thing. A man who fantasized about murdering women in the woods for more than a decade (evidence: the horror film) wasn't going to let her survive. She did all she could to stay alive, hoping someone would find her. Tragically, that didn't happen.
Monsters like Hilton will always be among us. But for today, right now, let’s all take a moment to applaud the incredible courage of Meredith Emerson.

What a story. Too bad the world lost a fighter like that. It is a shame that he was able to plead out and keep his life.
Ms. Emerson is a heroine to have fought so hard like she did. I'm glad that Hilton has been caught. Hopefully, LE will connect him to more crimes, as he surely seems to be the sought that has committed more.
His movie plot for a horror film of hunting women in the woods was just his mental playground of how to commit his crimes. I believe that when someone has taken it as far as an outline or written format, it will be acted upon. I saw that with the boys I worked with when they talked about the animals they killed or thought about killing.
Thanks for your comments. Cruelty to animals is truly a bad sign, one that should inspire intervention. Sadly, there are too many monsters like Hilton in this world.
For some odd reason people remember the names of the killers and not the victims. This is certainly a case where we should remember Meredith Emerson. She fought hard, and she deserves to be honored.

MY FOLLOWING EXPRESSION MUST BE THOUGHT OF FROM THE PASSION OF A HIKER. MEREDITH, I DIDNT KNOW YOU. THE HIKER COMMUNITY SUPPORTS YOUR MEMORY
ITs quite incredible in a hikers world
a world of gradients, pathways and views
we came here to be one, to love and protect what we have
still we have to endure the hardship of uncertianty
transient things come through our world and go out
most of these are in the form of a lost dream of a thru hike not obtained
or a new presence of mind that the woods and mountians
are not the prefered cup o tea you thought it was
Then there are the ones who cant get enough
the ones who breath in and out the sigh of a mountain morning
or see the flight of an eagle tangent down towards a splay of fish
on the surface of a crystal clear mountain lake
the ones who have good friends half of which are "town" friends
the other half will know you deeper, a hiker friend shares THE VEIN
even if you have never met each other
the connection between them
the love that is binded into the land and the path
sometimes, rare times, an entity appears
when shadows overcome the world we love
shadows we cant combat until they are upon us
when the dark cant get back to the light
we will go back, we always do
we will do so with a heavy heart and the extra prayer for the memory
of the one who had the bright eyes and the one who had the funny laugh
we will search ourselves for something to make it all make sense
some of us will hurt in our hearts for a long time
some of us will try to keep it in, only to find out you cant
all of us who are entwined into this path...and each other
will forever remember
a life cut short can still remain in essence
Meredith's spirit is now in the wind
and the wind is all around us
breath it in and enjoy what it gives you
a knowledge that her smile is back
a heart tug will remind you she will still frequent the places she loved
she is no longer in the dark, she can never be hurt again
God speed to the recovery of her loved ones
senseless as all of this is, it is
prayers to let all see again the bright star she gave
let her spirit guide you, her radiance can still be a comfort

Gary M. Hilton: Evil, Demonic, Cannibal, Ritual, Serial Killer, had no victim profile, only a preference. Most of his rage was directed at females. Once the Truth Prevails, he will be categorized as the Hannibal Lecture of the 20th & 21st Century with a victim tally that goes back decades; 47 years acording to him...
GMH's Trail of Terror, was driven by Pornography, Drugs, and Bondage/Rituals
* Combined and perfected the Traits of many Serial killers, organized at times: He didn't want his primary den, or ritual grounds identified, but disorganized at others, continously trying to throw off LE by using different MOs, and diversions, such as jurisdicitional boundaries, creating squabbles among them and taking advantage of the lack of communication.
*GMH, was convicted of arson, and used this method and others to clean crime scenes and eliminate forensic evidence. GMH, not only used this method to clean crime scenes but used arson as on of his many weapons in his arsenal of death. GMH, torched his fiance's home in 1982, with her and her elderly parents inside. GMH, said, "If I can't have her, then nobody can!"
*GMH, had a distinct pattern of travel, which can be traced using the Appalacian Mountains as a guide, and ancient areas of FL. His victims were spaced out in one year intervals, and extended fron NY, to FL.
* GMH, utilized hunting schedules, posted lands(hunting clubs) State and Federal Parks & Forests & was very knowlegeable of police procedures, and forensics. strategies & procedures. His victims were stranger on stranger, which created statistical roadblocks for LE.
* Utilized Religion, Ancient Civilizations, & Native American history, and rituals. GMh collected Ancient Artifacts and marked one grave which contained many victims, with an artifact that characterized a demonic mask. GMH, also marked his burial grounds with glass canning jars, for relocating them in case of an extended absence.
* GMH, was very creative and used several ploys to lure and then capture his prey. His dog Dandy, was well trained and was utilized in many of his ploys.
On one occasion GMH,and two Associates, on a rapidly flowing river, created a scenario of a man and a dog flipping a canoe. His targeted victim was sunbathing on a sandbar with her dog. This occured in Madison Co., FL. The victims instincts activated an alarm and she would live to tell her story.
He would pull up behind the vehicle of potential victims, blink the lights, and once they pulled over, tell them that sparks were coming from their undercariage, then offer them a ride.
-One lady said that he would pretend to be blind and used the expandable baton to look like a blind person's cane, & Dandy as his seeing eye dog. She almost was tricked into believing him, but later saw him driving his van.
He carried himself as Traveling Preacher, Soldier on a perpetual mission, and was emulating Joshua; Of the Old Testament Bible: 'The Soldier's soldier', in his final days before capture. GMH, has over 15 identical traits of 'Joshua.'
* GMH, is self diagnosed with MS, & was taking large dosages of riddilin. I am confident that he is stricken with CJD, due to his cannibalism, as well as other residue in his dens and staging areas.
GMH, is demonic, which is due to the symptoms of the CJD: brain cells mutated creating a demonic personality. GMH, pulled his own teeth except for a couple, said it made him look more evil. He told his ex bosse's wife, "when I come off my meds, 'The Demons' , come out in me!".....
* GMH, was Military Trained; Special Forces, Very Intelligent(150+IQ) Cagey, Creative, Calculating, Opportunist, with no Human Emotions. He was obsessed with the power he possesed over his victims.

Out on the trail, when a comrade falls, a trail angel rises.
Meredith, whose kind and loving spirit was cruelly taken from all those who knew and loved her, has joined the ranks of trail angels.
She will forever be our guide.
Because trail angels dance along the path of peace and joy forever.
Because trail angels watch over those who merely want to walk forever.
Those who simply want to live.
Those who want to live simply.
And beautifully as Meredith did.
Merediths light once illuminated the path of hundreds of friends and family members as well as among the many, many she touched along the graceful trail of her life.
The light Meredith brought us has not been extinguished.
It has risen.
It now illuminates the path of millions
Across our nation.
Around the world.
And as her light rises, we come to know its source.
A source inextinguishable.
An inner source.
It came from Merediths compassion.
Her kindness.
Her love of outdoors.
Her love of animals.
It now fires our love.
Our compassion.
Our resolve to live better lives.
Kinder lives.
It warms us, consoles us, unites us here and now.
And as her light rises,
It ignites in us the good of our natures.
It reveals to us the beauty of these mountains.
It fires in us a renewed joy for living, for those around us, for the walks we share today.
Her light reminds us not to wait but to love while we still can.
Now….Stop.…Listen.
Hush and truly listen.
Hear the drums?
Feel them on the wind?
Hear the human tales of triumph and sadness that echo through these vast and ancient mountains?
These are human tales, bouncing off the cliffs,
Reverberating among the high tree lines,
Following the deep gaps.
Filling our hearts.
Separateness is an illusion, my friends.
There is no me.
There is no you.
There is only We.
We of this earth.
We the one.
I am you.
You are me.
Together , we are bound by common experience:
Love. Life. Hope. Joy. Sorrow. Pain. Memory.
Meredith Emerson is you.
You are Meredith Emerson.
Follow her light.
It will guide you well.
Remember.
Out on the trail, when a comrade falls, a trail angel rises…

Until recently the only book that I have read since college is 'Wolfscratch Wilderness'; a walk back in time of this area of the Apalacians in North GA. Unless of course, you count the 380+ pages of redacted pretrial evidence, in the Death Penalty Trial of Gary Hilton, for the abduction and murder of Cheryl Dunlap in Tallahassee, FL.
I am confident that the books given to Cheryl Dunlap, and Meredith Emerson, by GMH, came from used book and thrift stores. GMH, had been seen in the Jasper, GA ; Thrift Store, while holding Meredith Emerson hostage.
I have had excess time on my hands lately and thought I would go to the Jasper Thrift store and check out their selection of books. Of 3 shelves of books, 1 shelf was dedicated to 'Serial Killers'. I purchased several of the books. After researching the authors, I found that although the stories are fiction,(portrayed as fiction, for liability purposes) many are based on actual events, with consultants from the Mental Field, LE, profilers, & Justice Officials, both retired and active.
The events of one of the books 'MASKS', by Sallie Bissell, took place in Pisgah, NC, where John & Irene Bryant; 2 of GMH's eldest victims were abducted.
The last book that I read is titled 'Mind Tryst', by Robin Carr. After reading the book, I inadvertently opened the cover and saw where the books original purchase was made:
'A BOOK NOOK'
BUY-SELL-TRADE
3342 CLAIRMONT RD
ATLANTA, GA 30329
(Clairmont Rd. is aprox 70 miles from the Jasper Thrift Store)
This is Gary M. Hilton's old stomping grounds...Coincidence, maybe...
Gary Hilton: Misfit with a mean streak | ajc.com
Gary Hilton was officially charged with the murder of hiker Meredith .... though Tabor let Hilton live at a building he owned on Clairmont Road
Something that I noticed to be curious about the majority of the over 25 books purchased was that their copyright dates were from the 1980's to the late 1990's.
Many of the books were of serial killers that were copycat killers of individual serial killers past.
Gary Michael Hilton, had no victim profile, breaks all molds of serial killers profiled, changed his MOs, signature, and method of abduction.
He was/is very evil, creative and emulated a soldier on a perpetual maneuver,
as well as a 'Traveling Preacher', long distant hiker, kayaker, and others.

some quotes from Hilton interview done by NC LE/April 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When asked how the other prisoners & guards treated him, GMH said:
"No one messes with me here. They treat me real good."
"I've got my own T.V. 'I READ'. I've got my meals cooked, served...the dishes are washed. My laundry is done....Hey, I love it!"
"I'm gonna f------ raise hell, total hell. I'm not gonna be happy unless it takes three to four years to go to trial. Unless we have a 1,000 person jury pool, and unless we have at least two changes of venue. And that's just to begin with (laughs)."

BuQue Lady, Meredith Hope Emerson, was/is a kindredred spirit and a fighter. She brought GMH's Trail of Terror to an abrupt end; 'Good over Evil.'
I am confident that GMH, had been training for the movie for decades.
According to Samuel Rael; the movie producer/Attorney(officer of the Court), GMH, hand picked the cast, crew, film locations, story plot, and tutored the lead actor in the art of a serial killer. The same cast & crew filmed 6 movies in the North GA Mountains.

Snipet from a couple of Ralph Daughtery's comments:
He was nearly 40 years old at the time but was very into survivalist if you will. He talked about Nam a lot and when the guy he later ran over a couple of times with his pickup pointed a finger toward him to make some point (I'm not sure exactly, I wasn't paying that close attention),
Hilton said, "I'll eat that finger".
I had to intervene to sort of cool things off before he jumped across the table.
*******************************************************
But it was Hilton. Hilton wanted to kill people, even back then.
One other note of interest. Hilton and his friend Rodney and the people they brought with them, family and Rodney's girlfriend who audibly gasped at my testimony, were living in Cumming at the time.
That's apparently why we keep seeing Hilton's name come up in Cumming in murders. It's not a coincidence.
Hilton should have been put away a long time ago and never let out. May Meredith Emerson and all of Hilton's other victims rest in peace.
This victim got lucky.

'GARY MICHAEL HILTON: HANNIBAL LECTURE OF THE 20TH & 21ST CENTURY'
I am confident that the discovery of the unusually high volume of women vanishing in the southeast was due to the establishment of VICAP in the mid 1980s.
With new techinlogy and leadership within the FBI, the BSU, took on a very important role in major investigations and were no longer considered witchcraft, or voodoo investigative techniques. Although housed 60' underground, to protect them from the light, their profiling techniques proved to be very accurate.
Since the BSU is the unit which is brought in to assist when a serial killer is preying in an area, yet illusive or stealth, oblivious to LE, as was Gary Michael Hilton & Associates.
The most prolific Serial Killer of the 20th & 21st Century; GMH, with extensive knowlege of forensics, police strategies and procedures, military trained and disciplined, made a mockery of normal LE Agencies. This is due to the lack of expertise dealing with SKs as well as the targeted victims being strangers. GMH, changed his MO, signature, victim profile, as well as copycating the exact style as other Serial Killers, while adding a tryst of his own unique creativity. GMH, honed his predator techniques, building confidence escalating to the point of taunting his expertise.
I am confident that GMH, although very intelligent didn't acomplish this alone. He had sidekicks as well as enablers. GMH, did not have the means to skirt the Justice System, time and time again without assistance.
The profiling process consists of several steps. Some of these steps are:
evaluation of the criminal act.
the specifics of the crime scene or scenes.
analysis of the victim, or victims, if located.
evaluation of the criminal reports of the local LE Agency conducting the preliminary investigation.
evaluation of ME or coroners autopsy report.
develop a profile with critical offender characteristics
When conducting an interview or profiling an unidentified suspect, the principle relied on is that behavior reflects personality. GMH, was a master of emulation which presented unique problems with identifying his personality traits. It would be interesting to see the profile prepared for the suspect(GMH) before his capture. I am convinced that one of the primary reasons that the expert profilers, that are usually very vocal in the media, have been silent is that GMH, fits no previous profiles....he is an anomally.
In GMH's interview of 01/07/08, there is a reason for his answers, as there was a reason for the specific questions asked by the GBI...Although the interview was plagued with lies by GMH, a treasure trove of information will be garnered from his responses.
Although there are numerous lies which will be obvious under scrutiny, the one that stands out the most is when he denied that he raped MHE. Once the truth was pried out of him. He was how many times. GMH, responded, "once". He knew that the number of rapes would be impossible to detect by LE...

Left out about noon on 10/07/09, heading for Coopers Creek WMA to do some deer scouting and info gathering on the Campsite/Staging Area of Gary Michael(Mack) Hilton.
Talked to a Public Safety Employee from a North GA County that is very familiar with the area, GMH, and he and his wife hike the Herbert Reece Trail; Blood Mountain where Meredith Emerson was abducted on 01/01/08.
In February 2007, he and his wife crossed paths with GMH. He said he looked into his eyes when they passed, and looked at his wife and told her there is something wrong with that man, his eyes were very strange, evil.
GMH, had two dogs. One was Dandy and the other was a small brown dog. Said he didn't know the breed(a dog skeleton was found in the CC WMA Site, tied to a tree).
They had also met Meredith Hope Emerson on the trail, later in 2007.
I also had the priveledge of meeting 'Fannin and Union Counties Finest'. Fannin County Sheriff pulled me over at the county line after following me for miles.
Union Co Sheriffs came in on the Help Call...'Three Cars in All!
I was ordered to stick both hands out the window while the Deputy held his glock pointed at my head with the Safety off, turn around and back towards him, then drop to the doggie position and cross my feet, then as he approached me from the rear, to place my hands behind my back(felt like a (contortionist).
Once handcuffed, I was frisked, top to bottom(keep in mind that I haven't had a traffic ticket in 40 years).
It gets much more interesting. I'll explain later. For those who want a link, all I can tell you to do is order the dashcam video...
Local officials collect more Hilton evidence
Quote:
Last week, the two agencies and the State Attorney's Office met with Georgia and North Carolina officials. They agreed to release the evidence to Florida investigators.
FDLE lab personnel will go through the evidence for hair, fibers, DNA, blood and fingerprints, said Maj. Mike Wood, of the Sheriff's Office.
"There's just so much evidence that can be mined out of this entire process," Wood said. "It's almost beyond description. It's a little bit overwhelming, quite frankly, but we're very confident that it's going to be of benefit to us in the Cheryl Dunlap investigation, as well as the Bryants'. It has a serious potential to tie the unknown cases at this juncture."
************************************************************************************
If you think the above comment is breaking news from the Fannin County, GA Campsite/Staging Area, think again, it was released on Feb 14, 2008.
There were 3 Sites of GMH's found in Fannin County alone. The UCSO Lt. that interrogated(debated)me said that clothes were found in all 3 sites. Remember that was only Fannin County, GA.
GMH's license was queried in almost all North GA Counties on numerous occasions(over 80 times in 10 years) indicating the possible of many sites in several locations. If you consider that he was eyewitnessed camping as far north as Pennsylvania, then as Major Wood of LCSO said, "The amount of evidence is beyond description, quite frankly it is overwhelming and has a serious potential to tie the unknown cases"......
Yet trailer loads of evidence has been discovered since that statement was made. I am confident that many of the 425 missing 'Cold Cases' in GA, alone has been linked to GMH, yet their families are left to mourn their losses.
Over a year and half since the above article was released, yet the same antiquated strategy of silence is being adhered too by the dysfunctional Justice System that enabled Gary Michael Hilton & Associates to prey on our Family, Friends, and Loved ones, for decades, oblivious to Law Enforcement and the American public....

11Alive's Jaye Watson takes a closer look at how the murder of Meredith Emerson has affected thousands around Metro Atlanta in a deeply personal way in this blog entry.
I had been on the phone all day, talking to people about it. Close friends and not so close friends were calling me, asking for some inside information on the murder of Meredith Emerson.
"What happened over those three days?" "What did he do to her?"
I didn't have the answers myself, but call after call we played out one horrible scenario after another, hoping we were wrong, fearing we were right.
Today, I pitched the story about why we care so much about Meredith Emerson when people die everyday in Atlanta, when we report on various murders every week. There was unanimous agreement that we should do the story, because many of us in the newsroom felt very affected by the story ourselves. We interviewed Emory University Psychiatrist Dr. Boadie Dunlop. We asked him why this story? "What this attack speaks to is we're not safe anywhere."
Dr. Dunlop talked about the disconnectedness in society, how we expect bad things to happen in the city, but not in the mountains.
"We're more and more closed in our lives and there's no refuge anymore," he said.
Whether you like to hike or not, Dunlop says people associate a national forest as a place of pristine beauty and peace. Now the image of the North Georgia Mountains serves as a reminder that a terrible thing can happen anywhere to anyone. Dunlop also says people identify with and have empathy for Emerson who was put in a powerless helpless situation through no fault of her own.
"When traumatic things happen people desire information as if the information can give them control over the event in some way, to make sense of it, to understand it," he said.
But the Emerson case proves that sometimes there is no answer, just a horrible act.
While many people we talked to on the streets told us they're signing up for self defense classes, thinking of buying guns or tasers, Dunlop says it's important to keep this heinous act in perspective.
"We can never eliminate risk in our lives. To stop walking in the woods out of fear, but to keep driving on the freeways, logically doesn't make sense...It was just so unlucky that this happened to her. The chance this will happen again is extrememly small," one person said.
Dunlop reminds us life is not without risk.
"We try to protect ourselves and yet this still happened. And that's where the powerlessness is. We say, 'it happened to her and it could happen to us'," said Dunlop.
Dunlop says it's understandable, in the short term to emotionally process all the new information in the case. But over time, the emotional power and impact of the story will, and should, diminish.
"This is a rare event so it sticks with us," he said.

After reading Ann Rules' book; 'Green River, Running Red',
my suspicions of the reason for the silence by the Justice System, in the Gary Michael Hilton; Serial Killer Investigation has peaked.
Henry Lucas: Serial Killer(TX) of numerous victims sentence was commuted by then Governor George Bush. Then a similar strategy was used to pry unknown victims identity and location from Gary Ridgeway(WA), by prosecutors pre-conviction. Would it be off base
Proclaimed 'The Real Story' of America's Deadliest Serial Murder, the book highlights the lives of Gary Ridgeway's victims, for which I salute Ann Rule. They were mothers, sisters, aunts, grandaughters, neices, and daughters...
Ann Rule, proclaimed the Master of True Crime Reporting, sifted through almost 100, 000 pages of official transcripts, pics, LE records/reports, and maps, identifying critical info.
For over two decades Ridgeway eluded Law Enforcement while the body count continued to rise and the suspect list of those scrutinized by the Green River Task Force grew to over 40, 000.
Although Ridgeway's first victim Wendy Lee Coffield was discovered in the Green River in July 1982, it wasn't until November 30, 2001, almost two decades later, that Gary Ridgeway was identified by DNA as the Green River Serial Killer and Arrested. GR, was housed in an ultra security cell.
GR was arested for soliciting prostitutes two months prior to the discovery of the first victim and was suspected in 1987 as being the Green River Serial Killer. He was cleared after passing two polygraphs and convincing LE of his innocence. GR, would let some of his victims live as well as befriending some for alibis and witnesses to confirm his innocence. Obviously a psychopath, passing the polygraph was childsplay for him. GR also claimed that there was a Good Gary and an Evil Gary, although LE discounted the claim.
On December 5, 2001, although responsible for many tragic murders, Gary Ridgeway was formally charged with the murder of only four victims: Marcia Chapman, Opal Mills, Cynthia Hinds, and Carol Ann Christensen.
Ironically in August 1982, in the clenched hand of victim Opal Mills, was a brown Cau. hair yanked from her killer's head. It had been bagged, tagged, and misplaced. A tag number reported to LE, nineteen years before GR's arrest by a friend of Kim Nelson; another victim, had also been lost...
The Federal Govt contributed $500,000.00 in Dec 2001, to help pay for DNA tests for 45 more probable victims, where there were no charges yet filed.
Several Meetings between Task Force Members and the Proscecutors were held to devise a strategy. A unique or 'out of the box' strategy was agreed upon that was to be held in the upmost secrecy under the radar of the media and the public, even the victims families.
Their first goal was to locate the previously owned vehicles of Ridgeway's to check for DNA or other residue.
The Green River Task Force was housed in a segregated building and no one outside the Task Force knew the strategy or the avenue of the continuing investigation of the victims where charges hadn't been filed.
On March 27, 2002 Gr was charged with three more victims; Wendy Coffield, Debra Estes, and Debra Bonner.
The discovery in the Green River Case produced overt 420, 000 pages of discovery evidence, and that was only the beginning.
By June 2003, after threats by GR's defense team of a change of venue, it apeared that GR would be tried in King County, Washington, where the murders occured. GR's Defense Team consisted of 8 Lawers, 8 investigators, 2 clerks, and 6 paralegals. (Dream Team, huh..) The original jury summons consisted of over 10,000 registered voters, which was whittled down to 500 prospective jurors. The first tentative date of a trial was July 2004,
continued-
continued from previous comment:
It was June 2003 when the rumors began: Where was Gary Ridgeway? It was certain that he was not in the King County Jail, but any info on his whereabouts had been 'Sealed by a Judge'....
Green River Task Force Members and Search & Rescue teams were spotted in areas where victim's remains were previously located. Questions were asked, were proscecutors seeking evidence overlooked or or had they struck up some kind of plea deal with the defense team; 'Ridgeway's Life, in exchange for the identity and location of the unknown victims from Kings County, Washington? The plea deal did not include other geographical area that Ridgeway preyed..
The task force personnel wore civilian clothes to remain stealth to the media and behind the heavely tinted glass of the unmarked cars was a Prolific Serial Killer, wearing leg irons and handcuffs.
Rumors of where Ridgeway was being out of control. It was reported that he was being kept secured under armed guard in a posh apartment. The public was outraged that he was being held in luxury after the body count that he had amassed. The Task Forces PIA , under this pressure anounced that a cell had been constructed in the Task Force Headquarters and GR was living among the investigators. It was the last place anyone thought to look... There had been no precedent for this strategy..
In order to get in to the head of Ridgeway, although it meant spending so much time with an evil cold blooded killer, tantamount to residing with a noncharismatic Hannibal Lecter, it was necessary to bridge the wall, erected by his team of Attorneys and seek the truth of his Terror Trail. GR had a captive audience and relished the attention paid to him as did Ted Bundy, was delighted of the attention given him by Florida detectives after his 1978 arrest. Ridgeway would now have the opportunity to gloat over the details of his ghastly deeds.. He made himself available as a subject that was quite willing to participate in marathon interogations. He found pleasure in demonstrating his expertise in the art of of torturous murder, to his ideal audience; the same detectives that he had taunted, remaining oblivious too, for decades. He loved being the focus of their attention.
For the interrogators, it was exausting, disgusting, shocking, traumatic ,frustrating, and very horrific work. The experience would have been and unsettling and traumatic experience for anyone, hundreds of hours of grotesque recollections from a man that apeared totally harmless as he calmly described, raping, torturing, mutilitating, and killing dozens of Women in a halting and disspassionate voice. GR stated, "all I wanted to do was have sex with them and kill them."
When Ridgeway accompanied them on 'Field Trips' to the undiscovered Body Dumps, he brightened, smiling in anticipation, as they got closer to his killing fields and trophy areas...
The Task Force Team was elated and relieved when Psychiatrists and other FBI BAU Agents flew in to interview Ridgeway. It gave them a much needed break from their journey into the abyss, the darkness..
Although Ridgeway had maps and a sharp recall of the areas where the bodies were dumped, he could not remember his victims faces or names. When referring to his innocent victims remains, he would say, "I dumped 'it' in that location", meaning that they were objects subject to disposal...
GR, had let some of his intended victims, go free. He would say. "your to cute for a guy like me". He later admitted that he let them go for future witnesses, in case he should ever need them to verify that he was a good guy and couldn't possibly be the Green River Serial Killer.

After being asked to elaborate on his abnormal sexual desires during childhood, he admitted to frotterism, exposing himself, stalking, voyerism, rape, murder for sexual release, and finally Necrophillia. Ridgeway had, indeed, had an inapriate relationship with Mary Ridgeway, his late Mother. After wetting his bed at the age of 13 or 14, she had humilated him as well as sexually stimulated him. Ridgeway to being sexually aroused when his mother apeared half naked in front of him and spent 15 minutes or more soaping, washing, and drying his penis and testicles, causing an erection. Oedipus syndrome

(According to my info, GMH's childhood friend was asked if GMH, had mentioned having sex with his mother)
Ridgeway admitted to returrning to the bodies of about ten of the women having post mortem sex, until the flies came.. On one occasion his son waited in the truck only 30 feet away. When asked by the detective if his son remembered and threatened to tell, if he would have killed him? Gary Ridgeway, responded, "No....I might have"....
When asked how he felt when his first victim's remains were found. Ridgeway said that he felt that they were taking something that belonged to him... He began taking skeletons or partial skeletons to an adjacent State at that time to confuse task force detectives and prevent them from confiscating any more of his possessions.
By the time Ridgeway was scheduled to go to trial, 71 innocent victims' remains had been located in Kings County, WA, alone, by Task Force members with the assistance of Gary Ridgeway, K9s, Sonar-XRay Devices provided by the FBI, and

Snipit from R. Depue:
When I was a young man, a friend taught me the ancient art of dowsing, and after a time, I became something of a practitioner myself, finding water underground as a kind of parlor trick for friends. It might seem odd that a man so rooted in grim reality would take an interest in something so ethereal. In fact, I’m fascinated by the unseen forces at play in the lives of human beings.
My job has been to try to stop human predators before they kill again, and after studying them so closely over so many years, to me their traits seem clearly recognizable.
Evil is more than a vague notion. It is an entity, and it is manifest on the earth. It has reflexes and intuition, senses vulnerability, and changes its form to adapt to its surroundings. Those who do not believe the Devil walks this earth have not seen the things that I have seen.
Evil is not a discrete entity that springs forth fully formed. It is born in the mind, takes root there as fantasy, and prospers when normal human restraint can no longer contain it. I have seen it devour the personalities of men like Richard Speck, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy, turning them into blank-faced sociopaths who clearly know right from wrong, but choose, time and again, to follow their own base urges, with complete disregard for the terrible human suffering they cause.
I believe that every act of homicide causes a slight unbalancing in the world, and that it diminishes life’s universal equation. In the interest of justice, it is imperative that someone try to right that imbalance. But the task of fighting evil can take a terrible toll on the people who are charged with it. It can cost them their families, their equilibrium, their capacity for joy.

Hear me Roar: Meredith Emerson- the politics of sexual assault
Mar 27, 2008 ... The crime was not about sexual gratification but about demeaning and injuring a woman ... Too many women suffer fates like Meredith Emerson, ...
Meredith Emerson- the politics of sexual assault
A few days ago I wrote a post about the death of Meredith Emerson and women's safety.
More stories are breaking on the confession of Gary Hilton, the man who abducted and killed Emerson.
I stated previously that I did not know if Emerson had been sexually assaulted. Now reports say that yes, Hilton raped Meredith Emerson after she continued to give him the wrong pin number for her ATM card. He told police he raped her "because he was angry with her."
Wow, that line jumped out at me! Contrary to popular myth, men don't see beautiful women and become crazed with lust and attack them. More often, it's similar to what Hilton describes. They use rape as a tool to terrorize and harm.

Rob Neufeld on books: WNC novel fictionalizes trails serial killer
Rob Neufeld • COLUMNIST • February 28, 2010
Romance, a sociopath, and a Blue Ridge Mountain summer camp compete for top billing in Rose Senehi's novel “The Wind in the Woods,” and you might say the camp wins. The novel is one of 15 current books published by the new Boone-area outfit Canterbury House, which seeks to advance good writing, regional settings, suspense and stories of hope.
Canterbury's best-selling titles are the “Ride” series by Alabama writers Edie Hand and Jeffrey Addison (a.k.a. Don Keith). Their novella, “A Christmas Ride,” tells of miracles of reconciliation experienced by a family on Christmas stays in the mountains.
“The Soldier's Ride” involves visitations in a cemetery and an appreciation of war veterans' struggles.
Senehi taps another inspirational source: efforts to preserve wilderness and use its effects to build character in youth. She launches her book at four locations in Western North Carolina, March 7-14 (see box).
Creepy entrance
“If they only knew who they ushered out of that cell,” Gary Skinner, a sociopath, mutters to himself after being let out of the Buncombe County jail at the beginning of “The Wind in the Woods” (trade paperback, $15.95).
“If everything went the way he planned, by the end of the week he'd have enough cash to head back down to Satellite Beach” in Florida, where the murder of Melissa Hunt should have become a cold case.
Skinner murders people on hiking trails to get their money and bank cards.
Senehi drew some of her details from the October 2007 murder of John and Irene Bryant and from the confession of Gary Michael Hilton, the 61-year-old killer of Meredith Emerson in north Georgia in 2008.
Senehi's lead chapter, in which the reader catches up with the mind of Skinner, is literary and disturbing. Skinner's modus operandi is believably detailed and improvisational.
Very good suspense writing, however, cannot fully deepen the unambiguous division of good and evil in the novel. Skinner's story does not connect with the themes of the other characters' stories except as someone who generates fear and heroism.
(2 of 2)
The flip side
Romance is another matter. A love of Camp Green River is integral to lovers' love. “Almost every couple he knew,” Senehi writes of the camp owner, “Tiger” Morrison “met at camp, worked together at camp, or got together through some camp connection.”
Morrison breaks up with his stylish companion, Liz, because of her disdain for the commonness of camp. Liz wants him to turn over the camp to Sammy, his daughter by his late wife, who died in a car crash with a drunken driver.
Sammy lives and breathes the camp. “She practically grew up learning to look for and recognize anything that grew or crawled around on the forest floor. Over the past 24 years she'd hiked every trail on their three thousand acres a hundred times.”
When Sammy goes on a hike to Ruby Falls with Patrick, a smitten camp counselor, they talk about one of Patrick's charges, Tucker, a math prodigy with a nature deficit disorder.
“Are you familiar with the Fibonacci ratios?” Patrick asks Sammy. Yes, she had read about it in “The Da Vinci Code.” The ratios show up in pine cones, flower petals and other natural patterns, and Patrick figures he “can teach it to Tucker and try to draw him into connecting his number fetish to nature.”
That's the third element in the book: connecting children to an ethic that goes back to the Cherokee, from whom Morrison's ancestors got the land, and to Ernest Thompson Seton, the Scots founder of the League of Woodcraft Indians.
It's an ethic that this region can boast.
“The year 2010,” Senehi writes in her acknowledgements, “marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of summer youth camps in the Hendersonville/Brevard area, which contains the highest concentration of camps in the United States.

THE BLUE RIDGE SERIES...
The Wind in the Woods is my second book in
the Blue Ridge Series. Woven through this
story is the 100-year-old history of summer
youth camps in the Hendersonville/Brevard
section of Western North Carolina--which has
the highest concentration of summer camps in
the United States. Hundreds of thousands have
had the most unforgettable summers of their
lives there. The 15 camps in this area comprise
over 10,000 acres, and therefore make up a
considerable section of unspoiled, undeveloped
mountain forests. Loosely modeled on The
Green River Preserve in the Green River
Valley. The Wind in the Woods tells the story
of one camp owner's struggle to preserve his
3000-acre youth camp with the help of the
Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and The
Nature Cosnervancy.
One of the major plot lines traces the
murderous rampage of 61-year-old alleged
serial killer, Gary Michael Hilton, who
confessed to the murder of 24-year-old
Meredith Emerson who went hiking with her
dog in the Northern Georgia mountains on New
Year's Day 2008 and never returned. I used his
confession to create, in my novel, his stalking
of a young camp employee and the abduction
of Katie Warlick, the 41-year-old camp cook.
Hilton is also the sole suspect in the killing of
John and Irene Bryant, a couple in their
eighties, who were murdered in October 2007
while hiking in North Carolina's Pisgah National
Forest. In deference to the Bryant family, I have
changed them to two widows in their seventies
and put the scene in neighboring Rutherford
County. The book opens with their
disappearance and traces an exact timeline
sequence of the Bryants' disappearance and
subsequent murder investigation.

Just returned and have a thousand stories to share from the CUE National Conference, Wilmington, NC, the past 3 days, but one in particular that simply fractured my heart:
Let me start by saying that Monica Caison, is an amazing lady whose Vision began over three decades ago, which has been honed to the point of excellence! She has the ability to coordinate searches from alligator infested swamp land, to the Colorado Rockies, Ground Zero NY/NY, to Haiti.. When a victim needs help, they are Priority, 24/7-365. This includes the families. She is an absolute firecracker!
As you are aware I was an Atlanta Firefighter. I was stationed near the Atlanta Stadium in a depressed and high crime area of the city.
On November 1, 1978, only blocks from this station lived a 16 year old teenager named Donna Green. Donna was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, to give birth to a beautiful baby boy named Raymond Lamar Green.
A Couple days after giving birth, she received a visitor; a teenage stranger that said that her sister had given birth to a baby in an adjacent room. She said that her sister was asleep and ask if she minded if she visited her.
Donna, being polite and always open to new friendships, said that she would love to have her company. Her new friend visited her everyday thereafter.
Once Donna and Baby Raymond was released to go home, she received a knock at her door on Prior Street. Much to her surprise, it was her new friend, that had came to check on her and the baby's welfare.
Donna decided to go upstairs to take a shower and left the baby in the care of her brother. Baby Raymond, got fussy, so her brother was relieved when Donna's friend picked him up and consoled him.
Her brother dozed off thinking that Raymond, was being well taken care of.
'Baby Raymond vanished that day, over 31 years ago'...
Donna frantically called APD and reported the abduction. An investigation was conducted and concluded that Baby Raymond was sold on the Black Market.
A couple years ago, after three decades of anguish, Donna contacted APD to request a new cold case investigation. She found that there were no records indicating the abduction. She presented APD with the newspaper article for verification.
Donna was reading a magazine article one lonely night, a few days ago at 1AM, which was about Monica Caison and CUEs National Conference. Donna, at wits end, dialed her number. Donna, expecting a recorder was shocked when Monica answered her phone, listened to her traumatic story, and invited her to the conference, although the registration deadline had passed.
One of the classes at the seminar was taught by renouned 3D & Sketch Artist: Diane Trepkov.
Monica arranged for Donna to meet with Diane, upon arrival. Diane extracted over 4 pages of descriptive information from Donna's memory as well as other pertinent info and had a sketch completed, which was identical to the suspect, by the following morning. By that afternoon, Diane had a sketch completed of Baby Raymond.
Needless to say Donna Green was overwhelmed that complete strangers would go to these lengths to locate her lost child, by a simple late night phone call...

Marija, the proof is in the pudding.
Monica said to one of the families of the Missing, " It may take a long time, and I can't promise you that we will locate him, but I will promise you that you will receive 100% of me!"
Monica was being very conservative, saying only 100%...

◦Monica Caison; An Amazing Lady, Searcher, and Advocate for the Missing and Murdered Victims Families, held a National Conference in Wilmington, NC, with a theme ‘Expanding the Vision’.
One goal of the Conference was to feature and bring media attention to as many victims as possible.
The finally was a Cape Fear River Candlelight Vigil.
During one segment of the Vigil, when Murdered Abduction Victim; Morgan Harrington’s Mother: Gil, was reading a poem that she had written in her Memory, it was dark except for the candlelight, and I noticed movement on the river beside us. It was a snow white sailboat, that was analygous to a dove flying upriver with its lower wing tip skimming across the water..very spiritual, very moving..
Another of the Missing and Murdered Victims: Britanee Drexel’s Family and Friends were in attendance. Due to space availability, I roomed with, and became close friends with a family member of Britanee’s.
Britanee vanished while on Spring Break in Myrtle Beach, NC, one year ago. There has been breaking news in her Investigation.
The following video from Good Morning America, tells the heartbreaking story from the Mother of a Missing Person, and the Hope, she clings too:

When I located GMHs Primary Den and Garbage Pile, which contained kids clothes, womens clothes, mens clothes, hairbow, and many other items that shouldn't have been buried in black garbage bags, two squad cars and a K9 Unit was dispatched after futile attempts to get the GBI to respond. I actually had to give them directions to the primitive campsite: Dawson Forest WMA: 'Wildcat Tract', which was in their jurisdiction.
After a very long conversation and debate, the clothes and other items were left on the ground for the wildlife to destroy and the responding LE returned to service. These items could possibly link GMH & Associates to unknown victims. I walked a few yards into the forest from the garbage pile and located a pair of women's slacks that appeared to have been jerked off. The panties were intact and indicated that they had been jerked off the person wearing them...
The following comment is from the K9 Officer that responded, that told me that GMH, is a petty drifter that had murdered 'Only 2 Women' for the proceeds of their ATM cards. When I asked, ‘what about Levi Frady’? The response was: 'Levi was male and did not fit GMHs profile'. I asked, ‘what about John Bryant; Pisgah National Forest, NC’? He said that I was too consumed, needed to back off, and told my wife that she may want to seek therapy for me:

Feb 7, 2008 Mr. Adams,
Should have, would have, could have, it makes no difference NOW. He may have had 100 victims, but he won’t anymore because he is locked up and I don’t forsee him getting out any time soon. I appreciate the fact that you honor my opinion although you don’t agree with my philosophy….isn’t AMERICA great! This is the only country where you have those liberties Mr. Adams, the same liberties in which you claim to have defended and I appreciate your service. Although we are afforded rights in this country, it doesn’t make America perfect. Our economy is not perfect, our politics aren’t perfect, there are so many things less than perfect in this world, but I don’t waste my life counting them. By the way, I don’t recall recommending therapy for you sir, but if you feel that you need it, I might would encourage it. I’ve read all the posts on this thread. You and I have a difference of opinion because of our differences in back grounds and beliefs. Our entire country is made up of folks just like me and you…..people who aren’t perfect. Condemnation in children does not encourage children to change their behavior, neither does condemnation of those who serve and protect us everyday. It’s people who choose to constantly condemn others that never see the positives in those same people. I don’t understand how you can hold yourself hostage by choosing to wallow in the could haves, would haves, should haves of this case. I don’t believe that it was right for Hilton to be allowed to go unnoticed, but it happened….can’t change it today or tomorrow. I am very knowledgeable about this case, I am very close to one of the detectives here and I

I have heard some things before the public was aware. What you don’t know is what he told law enforcement in those 100+ hours of questioning because you weren’t there. None of do, and probably never will. Levi Frady does not fit Hilton’s MO, he was NOT decapitated (please check your sources again) and Mr. Bryant was in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like Meridith, just like you or me or any of us when other people crack. I believe that because he was so close to your home it has unnerved you. Well, he’s not coming back. We may never know all of the things he did, but he will pay for his sins. I pray that you will find some way to go on with your life before your family falls apart. Being obsessed with anything (money, job, the world) only leads to destruction. You have to choose your battles wisely. Again, I find the posts on here to be quite informative but sometimes wrong. The best part of all is that we enjoy the right to debate, blog, be opinionated and with all the ills in America, we’re still the BEST country of all. May God bless the family of all victims of violence at the hands of another, every one that we know about and those we don’t. Thanks, Just a Thought

Awe...I can't talk about it anymore...it just makes me too sad. I'll never understand why he still went ahead with it knowing so many people witnessed them and the dogs together that day and had to know he'd be a main POI. Meredith sure did everything possible though. God love her.

Because she challenged him on the morning of 01/04/08, sacrificing her life for others..
Hope we all could be so courageous..
Meredith knew that GMH, never intended to let her go free..
She fought him with mind, body, and spirit..
She was Victorious...

To the Emerson Family, I have long wanted to write this but never quite knew what to say. I never knew Meredith, I live 3,000 miles away on the West coast, but feel incredible sorrow for this family. Meredith was a beautiful and very talented individual, loved and adored by so many. I feel such sadness that Meredith will never have the opportunity to fulfill her fondest goals and dreams. The videos I have seen have moved me to tears. She had so much to give...so much to offer this world. This tragedy breaks my heart...as an educator I know how important the contributions of young people are...to everyone. I want this family to know that Meredith's memory is being kept alive. So many keep her close and I was so pleased to see the right to hike group honor and remember her. When I think of Meredith I see the smile shown on this page in my mind and realize that this life mattered, that she made a difference, and she valued life to its fullest. Meredith you give hope to all of us, you are not forgotten, rest at peace always and know that you are loved. Your life made a difference to each one of us, and to a man who is a total stranger...this man...you inspire me.
