One-Way Invitation to "Hell"

by Susan Murphy Milano

Rarely does a day go by when we are not inundated with the horrifying details of what some sexual predators are capable of doing to children, graphically laid out on shows such as Nancy Grace, Geraldo at Large, CNN News and local stations where we all live.

Victims are not taken at gun point. Instead predators are luring their young victims with a simple click of the mouse. Most parents remain computer illiterate, far behind their technology savvy children. Parents are not prepared to recognize the dangers waiting for their child on a computer or cell phone screen, similar to a one way mirror, into Hell.

As the Florida mother of 3 children, Jaemi Levine preached to each child the dangers waiting outside the walls of her 4-bedroom ranch home. Jaemi was a stay at home Mom, active in the P.T.A., Girl Scouts, and just about everything else related to her family. Her daughter Nicole had just celebrated her twelfth birthday. Nicole was your average pre-teen, playing the tuba in the high school band and a straight “A” student.

Jaemi was a vigilant parent. Always knowing at every moment where Nicole was and what she was doing and with whom, including monitoring her daughter’s online activities.

One night, Nicole went to hang out at a friend’s house to work on a report for school. While Nicole and her friends were on the computer, they took a break and headed onto a “Safe Site” approved for teen chat. Suddenly, up on the computer screen in an instant message, “Hi, I’m, lonely will you be my friend?”

Over the course of 3 weeks Nicole confessed private details to this new on-line friend of her life, the area she and her family lived in Florida where she attended Junior high school, to her favorite flavor of ice cream.

After gaining Nicole’s trust, the skilled child sexual predator convinced her they should get together and meet face to face.

Over the weekend Nicole asked her mother if she could walk to the bookstore 2 blocks from their home. " No Nicole, your sister is sick in bed and you know the rules about going anyplace by yourself. "Please Mom, Nicole begged, I'll only be gone for hour. I need to get a book for my homework assignment. After 15 minutes of debate her mother caved in to her daughters request. "Make sure you take your cell phone. If you are not back in exactly one hour, I will ground you for one week." Happily, Nicole kissed her mother goodbye and headed out the front door.

The hour passed, no Nicole. Frantically every 2 minutes Jaemi was calling Nicole’s cell phone, but she was not answering. Jaemi got into her car and drove to the bookstore and searched for her daughter. Jaemi continued to call and look for Nicole. Finally Nicole answered. She sounded strange. “Where are you?” her mother demanded. “Oh I’m almost home,” Nichole replied. But she was not. Jaemi called the cell phone again. It was the longest two hours of Jaemi’s life. Nicole walked out of the bookstore parking lot and into the car. Nicole was panicked and badly shaken. “I circled everywhere looking for you, who were you talking too?” Nicole had stared at the dashboard unable to look at her mother and respond. “Oh it was um, a 29 year-old man from Pakistan he just asked for directions.” Jaemi looked at her daughter in shock, “what if he had grabbed or hurt you?” Nicole tearfully replied, “I learned never to talk to older men on the computer.” Jaemi said, "my heart sunk down to my feet, knowing my daughter had already been raped."

Once inside the house, Jaemi Levine placed one call to 911 and the other to a friend of the family who was a child psychologist.

The day, the hour, the moment would forever be etched in the mind of both mother and daughter. First, police arrived and made a report followed by a detective removing Nicole's computer and taking it to an expert in capturing all conversations on the hard drive.

Two days later a Detective returned to Jaemi Levine's home with disturbing information. The 29-year old man from Pakistan was a known sexual predator who was part of a large human trafficking operation. They lure young girls. In Nicole's case, the man held her at knife point. This particular group of sexual predators video tape their victims (like Nicole) to show they are still virgins. And get the victim to meet them again where they are abducted and shipped overseas to a foreign country and sold as sex slaves.

Most young children are not as fortunate to escape with their life. Five years later, Nicole now 17-years old, speaks at schools presenting information about on-line safety and sexual predators.

And Jaemi Levine has worked to become a tireless advocate for families across the country, educating anyone whom invites her to speak in hopes that we read about one less tragedy with our morning coffee.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2009 Jaemi Levine, Founder of Mothers Against Predators, Inc., will be a guest on Justice Interrupted.

Wow this story really hits me in the gut!!!! Will you be writing more on this story? I can't wait to listen to the show on Tuesday.

The world has become a scary place. Even our small towns aren't safe any more. Thank you for sharing, this is important for everyone--not just mothers. This could happen to anyone.

This story is a classic example of how with monitoring of parents kids will explore and venture out to meet a stanger through a computer because it does not pose a threat like when a stranger comes up to the on the street.

The notion of the computer being dangerous to kids falls under the premise of "it can't happen to me"

This girl was indeed fortunate. Most kids are not so lucky. The sex trade and selling of our children is widespread. It is not tracked because the victims vanish often to another country. This is a very real and dangerous epidemic

Parents are unable to keep up with the speed of changing technology . Schools with computers must teach stranger danger safety starting at the K-1 grade

This story is so important for all parents. Jaemi's daughter was so very lucky to get out of this situation when she did. So many other children and young adults are not so lucky. Human trafficking is out there, we don't hear about it in the headlines and until it happens to you or someone close to you, we don't think about it. This could be what has happened to so many of the missing! Girls, boys, women and men, all are vulnerable to this. Sexual slavery has come to America but we arent' recognizing the dangers yet!

This is an eye-opener for parents everywhere! Thank God little Nicole survived her ordeal. Sadly, it goes the other way far too often.

That Jaemi is trying to get Nicole's story out is great. I applaud her for that because it's one that needs to be told over and over again until parents learn that even the most diligent should be more diligent when it comes to their child's online chats.

This is why we are out here and why Jaemi does what she does. So many times all it takes is one voice to set off a chain reaction. And with all of our voices together we can stop this from happening to another child.

Nicole, a special message to you. Stay Strong. You are a true hero for all you do to protect other kids from experiencing what you had to experience.

Jaemi and Susan, I am so grateful for your voices, may we all hear the wisdom and value in your caution and advice.

Working with over 50 child advocacy groups, I hear and see alot. It is moments like these,as rare as they are, that give me hope. How many children did not get the opportunity to tell their story because they did not walk away? We can protect our children, and by working together we can make a difference.I have spoken with Jaemi over several phone calls, it is my "take" on the situation that they were lucky on so much.
A friend of mine Tad Camp, said it best one day, "There is evil that walks among us".
He is exactly right, and now "we" are walking among them, we are the childprotectioncommunity.com, we are many and we are everywhere!
Thank you Jaemi for being a part of our effort and a voice that is needed, and thank you Women In Crime Ink for posting this story for more parents to learn from and to make this type of horrific crime more visible to us all.

There are all types of predators. One such predator preyed upon my adult niece probably because he knew she had a five year old daughter. He molested my great niece and she was taken away and put in foster care. He on the other hand is still walking the streets.

Anonymous said...

Jaime & Nicole - thank you so much for sharing your story!I know how hard it is but it's a very strong one and people need to hear it!
As an advocate myself - our story can be found at www.myshatteredreality.com with my daughter Tivona's story in her own words as well - the unfortunate thing is predators DO walk among us and they are not just online. 85-90% of children who are raped/molested are done so by people they know. Most children live with and care for their molesters. Our lives will NEVER be the same again. My daughter suffered in silence from the ages of 8-12 (she is now 15 and she is finally going to court in July but it's only a Civil Trial because I chose to pay to prosecute). The unfortunate thing about a majority of these cases is only 1 in 16 is ever Prosecuted! That is what ANGERS me so!I am fighting to remove a man, whom we've come to find out has a 50 year history of hurting women in our family (and who knows how many others) and the prosecuting attorney's office says "it's in the family" and "it's he said/she said". Very frustrating! We will keep fighting - we are now trying a state AG over our local PA. Uphill battle I know but if someone doesn't speak for the kids and try to make a difference WHO will? Why should we continue to be silent and why should these predators walk free. I last saw a picture of our perp on FB with his arm around another 8 yr old granddaughter - here he goes again!
Thanks again for ALL you are doing. Maybe together and one voice at a time, we CAN make a difference for our future sons and daughters!
Bless you both -
Kimberly

Unfortunately it isn't only online predators we have to look out for. No matter what we do, what we tell our children or how much we monitor what they do, teenagers, being who they are, will always "test" the limits.

When I was growing up there were no cell phone or computers. I recall telling my parents I was going to the mall or going skating....but instead I was out hanging out with the bad crowd.

I also remember being approached out side at KMart by a man insisting I would make a great model and could he take my pictures sometime. I foolishly gave him my number. Lucky for me I had to give him my home phone (again...we had no cells). When my dad got wind of it and questioned the man when he called....the guy hung up and we never heard from him again. Who knows what could have happened had my dad not intervened.

The only way kids are going to realize that they are not invisible is to hear true stories from people their own age....like Nicole. She went against all she was taught and paid a very huge price. God Bless her for sharing her nightmare with others.

Your story gave me the chills. I am very protective of my children, but it now makes me all too aware of what happens outside my doors. This reaffirms my protectiveness for my children evermore. Thank you for sharing this horrid story. I am so sorry your daughter had to go through that...but at least with the help of all of us we will hope to put an end to disgusting behavior as that from ever happening to another child.

This piece of scum should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the the law and then shipped back to pakistan. I fully understand how vocal Jaemi is on this subject. We need to be there for our children and makesure this never happens to another child. Get involved in Mothers aAgainst predators as a first step. It is a good group fighting this kind of sick behavior.

Your story is as moving as it is a reality in today's world. Protecting our children who often lack the ability to protect themselves can at times be a difficult task, but definitely worth the effort. Sweet dreams and love to all.

I grew up with Jaemi, and can share that this has become the focus for her life. The fact that Nicole can be considered "lucky" in some way is a testament to the severe dangers posed by child predators - organized and amateur.

Join Jaemi in bringing this heinous international crime that hits so close to home to the attention of lawmakers, both here and overseas.

As a mother of an 11 year old daughter and an 8 year old son, this story really hits home for me. I am starting to hear about "cyber safety" at my kids' school, but this is clearly not enough. As in Nicole's case, she knew not to talk to strangers, but the danger was right there online. I applaud Jaemi for starting Mothers Against Predators. We need all the help we can get.

Unknown said...

This is a story that is still far too common. Mothers against Predators is an awesome group to help create awareness. More awareness and education needs to be taught in schools and homes to prevent this. Nicole is very lucky to have know that it was okay to talk about what had happened. I think that there are far too many who feel that it is not okay to talk about what happened if they have been a victim. We must educate our parents, our children and our teachers, pastors, etc. Unfortunately there are parents out there who don't care what their children are doing and some who are "too busy" to monitor their activities. We cannot be indifferent to what is going on or pretend like it can't happen to "our children". We have got to give our children "A VOICE". Good work Jaime and Nicole. I will look forward to Tuesday's program!

This is such a compelling, heartbreaking yet important story. Jaemi is a critical, unstoppable force in the effort to publicize , root out and stop predators on the internet. She should be applauded and supported by anyone who cares about people.

All it takes is a call to your congressman and join us in our fight.

My heart goes out to Jaemi and Nicole. Nicole is very brave for speaking out and going through our justice system. I'm an adult survivor who is only now feeling strong enough to prosecute. (To tell you the truth I feel I have no other choice.) Meanwhile the pedophile has left a line of other victims too scared and ashamed to fight back. I recently became educated on "Human Trafficking" and its growing popularity. It's my belief that the reason there exists a Market for child sex is because we haven't done enough to brand child molestation as a serious crime. I applaude Jaemi & Nicole for taking this stand. I pray that more and more of us Survivors take a legal stand in court regardless of the outcome. It's not until all of us overwhelm the dockets of our legal system that our Government officials (all of them!) will say WE ARE BEING FORCED TO TAKE ACTION for our constituents...or we won't be in office. We must back them in a corner. Please we need as many survivors to stand up like Jaemi & Nicole have done. Thank you for writing this article.

This story is so powerful and so important to the child abuse epidemic plaguing our nation today!
We MUST protect our children. We MUST educate the public and make parents aware of internet safety, child abuse signs/symptoms, prevention, intervention, reporting, and the increasing statistics.
These predators are stalking, raping and KILLING our innocent children.
Enough is enough....

For me this story rings close to my heart. As a parent of a child who was sexually abused by a family member the system seems hypocritical. They talk about early childhood education, headstart programs and putting money into our children. Yet we don't seem to think that protecting our children from predators is as important? I don't get it.

Yet, it is much more common then people realize. Don't ever let anyone let you feel like it was your fault. You were NOT asking for this, no matter what others may say. This was the problem I faced. I felt that I would be blamed, so I didn't have the courage to tell. Over 20 years later I finally told someone. I felt horrible shame and guilt. It was too much for me to carry around. Don't let this happen to you!!! You are a very brave young woman to do what you did by telling! I am soooo proud of you!

I hope they do make it into a film as that would put the message across to victims everywhere, but would also raise awareness to the vulnerable who seek solace online,. It's hard enough for an adult to resist when they're being played online by someone who asks ''Don't you trust me?'' and instead of saying ''of course not, because I don't even know you!" they fall for a predators games. If they make the movie, they need to focus on the manipulation the predator uses, in great detail in order to reveal how the minds of these monsters work! Nicole Levin got away, but not without harm, but she's a heroine to abuse victims everywhere for what she's doing and so is her mother. Don't print this if My other comment posted. ..

Your story is one that is becoming all too frequent. People are vanishing every day. Human trafficking is not a thing of the past or something that only happens in other places. It is becoming an everyday occurrence that children are snatched and sold into human slavery, often involving sex for money. It's a sad state of affairs and one that needs to have alot of attention drawn to it and quick. I urge you to contact Glendene Grant whose daughter Jessie Foster is believed to be a victim of human trafficking. She is very involved in bringing attention to this very issue and I think the two of you could really be the catalyst that is needed to get this out to the people the way it needs to be. I am so sorry that this happened to your daughter. Kids can never be warned enough and sadly sexual predators are growign in number! I was married to a man for 10 years and then found out he was in jail for a sex offense against a child, he had just been released several months before meeting me. I unfortunately found out because he molested my daughter. He only served a measley 2 years! It seems like a never ending battle to get the government to really give these scumbags the punishment they deserve so we have no other viable option then to teach our kids safety and how to handle a bad situation. I am happy that your daughter and you took a bad situation and turned it into a positive for another child. I hope that your story can be told, so everyone can be informed on how to protect their children, the computer is a wonderful place for kids to learn and unformtunately for them to be violated also.

This story is horrible. Why cant the computer be made a safer place for young teens. I know I have exposed many pedophiles on myspace and hope to keep doing so. I hope the 500 mark is reached and a movie would be great to open eyes to this type of crime. Good luck to both Mother and daughter.

As a therapuetic foster parent and Founder/Owner/President of When Children Cry ..representing ALL of our differently abled, damaged, broken, disturbed, neglected and abused..I work with the remnants of what's left, in these shell's of children, after these disgusting pervs do their damage, and it's heart wrenching. This horrific crime, doesn't only take their physical body, but rapes their minds and souls as well. For many, for a lifetime...I also work hand in hand with the Child Protection Community, and many other organizations in this effort.Folks PLEASE monitor your children closely for their safety. These filthy Perv's lurk everywhere, and some, as sickening as it sounds ,are parents themselves..You can NEVER be too careful in the sake of a child. Instead of concentrating nearly a year on the death of one child, Caylee Anthony, Nancy Grace would better serve the children if she while updating that case shortened the daily coverage which is repeat after prepeat after repeat and mention the 1500 to 2000 children in the USA murdered by their parents/caregivers every year. By focusing on one child gives the impression that children being murdered is rared and does nothing to let the public know the most damgerous place for too many children is with those who the world assumes loves and protects them,

Also this is the USA, we do not know if Casey is guilty of anything except being a liar and very odd but so is her brother.

People need to learn that sexual predators, are a BIG PROBLEM in our world. That don't come with signs on there forhead warning us to stay away.In fact it is quite the opposite, most of them seem nice and sweet.I know because I've lived it. My uncle molested me and my little sister for the first 10 yrs. of my life. He was able to do so because he was also very loving, spent alot of time just playing, horse back riding,Mountian climbing. He had more time for my sister and I then our parents did. We didn't want to tell on him,cuz then who would love us???Those are the thoughts of a little girl that just wants to be loved. So if someone is loving your child more than you are. You might want to take a closer look at things please!!!This is somthing you never get over, you just learn to live with it.Good luck and god bless.........

I think stricter laws should be enforced to anyone caught and found guilty of child abuse of any kind. Judges who slap hands of those found guilty should be investigated themselves, Why else would they allow these people to escape justice. Children need to be protected not the evil-doer. Wake up and smell the stink around you and give the guilty their due punishment.

Having had experience as a victim in this issue, I am all for more accountability and more severe punichment for these crimes. Convicted pedophiles are being released back into society after they serve a minimal term only to continue committing the same crime. Many children have ended up murdered by these released pedophiles.Churches are hiding their pedophile clergy and moving them to other parishes to continue to commit the same crimes. This all has to stop!

FleaStiff said...

I was a bit confused as to just what had happened. Was she photographed and somehow released?
Or was this just a rape by a Foreigner and therefore there is some assumption of organized trafficking because trafficking is such a suddenly popular media term?
Had the daughter been taught to be immediately suspicious of Foreigners?

Anonymous said...

I am so sorry you had to go through this, thank you for sharing your story.
Teens/children as well as parents need to be educated about the dangers online.
Children need to hear these stories. I don't think we will be able to stop this all together, because children will always be curious and want to see what will happen if they do something, even though we try to teach them the dangers out there. Children see themselves as indestructible, until that changes there will be stories like this.
We need tougher laws to keep these sickos in prison, there is no way a child molester/predator should have more than one conviction..

Susan Murphy-Milano said...

FleaStiff,

She was video taped with a knife at her throat during the rape. It was during a police investigation they learned the identity of this
serial predator. Part of a ring of individuals known to authorities for human sex trade of young children to other countries.

His only punishment, the offender was deported back to his country.

It seems the UK is in an even worse situation: they had an immigrant commit a violent rape because he wanted to get into the luxurious world of a UK prison!

FleaStiff said...

Sometimes the videotaping can be purely for entertainment but often it is used as an implement in some sort of later threats about putting it on the internet. Girls often would be violently raped and then turned-out as prostitutes. Now the internet just extends the criminals net further. Sending prostitutes to different locations is often profitable. Many call girls travel voluntarily to different cities so as maximize their income. Most customers seem to want "new stuff". Its no great surprize that foreigners get involved in this sort of thing. I think the root of the problem may be that children hear about multiculturalism in our schools and are taught that vigilantiism is wrong.

COMMENT TO FLEASTIFF: wow in one post you make the statement "trafficking is such a suddenly popular media term?"
Then your later posts seem to show that you recognize Human Trafficking as a problem. I'm confused as to your stand on this issue. AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE PROBLEM IS THAT OUR GOVERNMENT HAS NOT YET SET THE PUNISHMENT TO FIT THE CRIME. THE PROBLEM IS THAT PEDOPHILIA SEEMS TO BE GROWING IN POPULARITY. WITHOUT THE PEDOPHILES THERE WOULD BE NO "MARKET" FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING. And if you think it's just "Foreigners" I would suggest you do further research. Our children are innocent victims. Thank God for parents like Jaemi - and Thank God for survivors like Nicole.

Praise god she got away.. If everyone works to help stop these evil people our children can be free again.. our children shouldnt be taken away, the perpetrators are the ones who should be taken away..the fact most molesters are back on the streets.. uncurable & looking for more victims shows how little our children mean to the government.
People like Joey Tillman who set up & help organise groups such as www.childprotectioncommunity.com & many others are helping to make a difference. We can all play a part, however small.. the innocent are worth it... arnt they..?

Nothing is going to stop child abuse until we learn how to fight to protect our children! There are more laws designed to protect these sick and demented people than our children.

I am a survivor. Recently my five year old son revealed that a baby sitter and her friend sexually assalted him by performing oral sex and digital penetration on him back in Novemeber. She is also a teacher at his old school. The state attorney's office (Broward County Florida) refused to take his case even though he, through county provided counseling, was able to completely communicate the assault.

I immediately withdrew my son from his school, he lost all his friends (especially the one who was with him), I lost wages so I could get my son help and these women continue to work at the preschool.

By law, there are no grounds for dismissal nor am I in a position to discuss this situation for fear of a defamation of character law suit. Meanwhile, these women continue to take small children, infant to age 5, home to their house to babysit.

My son is the oldest of the children whom she watched. We used her once after all the parents at school praised her.

The police did not believe him at first and misclassified his case. Only through a friend did a Detective from another district contact me and later had the proper district Detective reach us.

Our son told a Forensic Psychologist what happened, but was afraid to name the cuplrit.

It took 3 weeks for him to divulge who did this to him. By that point I was told by another Detective to "let it go". The Detective told me he probably "saw it somewhere" and that he most likely was not assaulted. I explained that in no way that was possible. She proceeded to tell me I could not be sure of that because I could not be with him all the time.

My son, until this point had only ever been babysat by my sister, my parents, my in-laws and my best friend. We are always with our son. There is absolutely not one possible way my son could have seen this anywhere.

We completed his counseling. Amen for our counselor. She helped our son so much. There are still no definites that he will completely overcome this, only hope.

I wish more people spoke out about what is happening to our children. Maybe if we all spoke up we could force our government to write proper laws so that we could stop a multiple offender of hurting yet another child. If our laws were stricter we would not have lost so many children already.

Why does it take children to die to implement systems to help us protect and find our children after they have already been taken? How about we start focusing on the true victims here, our children who cannot fight for and protect themselves, and begin destroying the system that allows men and women to continue to rape, molest and sell our children.

The statistics show the lack of recovery for so many of these victims.. drug abuse, alcohol abuse, a life in and out of prison, promiscuity, suicide...
Statistics state that 60,000,000 people walking the earth now have been a victim, 1 out of every 5 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys, while 800,000 people are trafficked annually.

Sadly, I actually stand a longer jail term for harming one of these women for hurting my son than they would receive for urting my son. What a crock that is.

I will continue to pray for God's wrath to reign down on these perverts, especially since our Government cannot seem to pass a legitimate law to stop this.

We seem to care more about the world economy, the Presidents new dog and wether or not we think Michele Obama is the next Jackie O. What a messed up society.

Thank you for sharing this story with the rest of the world. I am a stay-at-home mother of three girls and a little boy, and it terrifies me that even though I am very active in my children's lives and in "their" business (which is actually my business) in the blink of an eye something as horrendous as this can happen. It seems that no matter how much we try to protect them there is always a demon lurking behind the door, just waiting for that chance. Regardless, we must keep doing our best to keep them out of harm's way, and I commend you, Nicole, for having the courage to step forward and not hide this from your mom, and Jaemi, for your efforts in educating the public on internet safety and child abuse. Thank you both for using your own personal tragedy to educate and aid in prevention.
