Criminal Profiling Basics

by Andrea Campbell

In John Douglas’s book, Mindhunter, he describes how he and others on an FBI team compiled the 1992 Crime Classification Manual, one of the most valuable tools used by profilers today. Douglas tells us about the operative style, which involves interviewing convicted murderers and rapists across the country. The task at hand: 1) study the crime, 2) talk to experts, 3) talk to perpetrators, 4) interpret those clues and 5) draw conclusions from patterns.

Douglas says the first step in profiling is advance preparation: checking police files, studying crime-scene photos, discerning autopsy protocols, reading trial transcripts, and looking for clues to motive or personality.

One of the first hurdles FBI agents faced in prison interviews was cutting through self-serving or self-amusing games convicts played. Douglas found he had to portray a persona, to sell the subjects his ideas to keep them interested so they would go along. He also says that contrary to popular belief, “just because someone acts like a maniac, doesn’t mean he doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing.”

Part of the interview process replicated that used by any good reporter: the who (who are the victimizers, who are the victims?), what, where, when, how and why of any story. Key here, along with drawing out the narrative, was observing interviewees’ behavior, including body language, and being able to pounce first. Sexual killers, for example, become skilled in domination, manipulation and control. Some can be quite charming, according to those who met with Ted Bundy. Some were so convincing, Douglas hesitantly admits, that after many interviews, agents went back, checked the killer’s record, and even contacted police in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred, to ensure they had locked up the right guy!

Some of the things FBI researchers found in the course of their conversations: victimizers often had relationship problems with women, and they often dealt with other stressors, such as financial problems or debt. Some had abilities above their job level, some drank heavily, some felt helpless in the face of life's frustrations. Many had a terrible childhood or upbringing. Often agents found killers had taken photos or other souvenirs from their victims. Some visited their victim’s grave site or even rolled in the dirt to relive the pleasure of killing. In the end though, Douglas concludes that serial killers and rapists are hardest to catch of all violent criminals because their motivations are more complex. The patterns are more confusing, since they feel no compassion, guilt or remorse.

Profiling Basics

The premise that all profilers operate under is this: To know the offender, look at the crime. Or, as Douglas says, “If you want to understand the artist, look at his work.” The trick is that there is no trick. Simply put, the criminologist is collecting a bunch of disparate and seemingly unrelated clues and turning it into a convincing narrative. But there is more to it.

In addition to evaluating a wide range of evidence and data, they must walk in the shoes of both offender and victim. They recreate crime scenes in their minds; learn as much as possible about the victims to imagine their horror -- to put themselves in the victims' place and feel the emotions they experienced as they screamed with no hope for help. The other watchwords for the process include: Behavior reflects personality.

First off, the offender is an unknown subject, hereafter referred to as UNSUB. As part of the basic background the criminologist needs to know:

  • What’s in the medical examiner's report, such as the nature and type of wound or wounds, cause of death, whether there was sexual assault, and if so, what kind?

• What was in the preliminary police report?

• What did the first officer see? Was the scene altered? Were there any changes (i.e., dignity moves like covering the face)?

• What do crime-scene photos and schematic drawings (where all directions and footprints are noted) show?

• Time of day, condition of location, signs of a fight, documents, letters, etc.; telephone calls made, position of the victim, check of closets, furniture, blood spatter, collecting of physical, trace, or impressions evidence.

• Anything taken? Even subtle objects like a lock of hair, a barrette, etc. need to be anticipated. (And so as not to be influenced on first pass-through, profilers always request that police notes should be on the back of photos.)

The “victim profile” is prepared. Some questions to be answered are: High- or low-risk victim? What did she say or do? Did she fight back? Why was she selected over all other potential victims? How? Who? In actuality, the victim profile can be every bit as extensive as the killer’s.

Methodology Means more Questions

Criminal (and victim) profiling is knowing about race, personality, job, home life, car, hobbies, familiarity with the area, relationship to police. Was the criminal organized or disorganized? Is there a violent crime in the past? Is the criminal on parole? Are there known stressor factors, such as a commemorative date? Is there any evidence of posing or staging? So many questions, so little time.

As Dr. Park Dietz says, “. . . none of the serial killers . . . has been legally insane, but none has been normal either. They’ve all been people who’ve got mental disorders. But despite their mental disorders, which have to do with their sexual interests and their character, they’ve been people who knew what they were doing, knew what they were doing was wrong, but chose to do it anyway.”

Definitions of some terms involved in criminal profiling:

psychotic — being legally insane, out of touch with reality. (“. . . voices made me do it.”)

psychopath or sociopath — knows right from wrong and consciously chose to do wrong. Lacks conscience or remorse.

necrophilia — sexual stimulation from seeing, touching corpse.

necrostuprum — theft of corpse for sexual pleasure.

lust murder — sexual compulsion to kill.

psychometric tests — administered by a forensic psychologist, they involve motives, background, family life.

modus operandi — What the perpetrator does to commit the crime. It is learned behavior, and it can change.

signature — What the perpetrator has to do to fulfill himself; it doesn't change.

staging — Offender tries to throw off investigators by making them believe a different crime occurred. I.e.: A rapist tries to make his intrusion look like a burglary.

posing — The signature; leaving the victim in a certain posture

serial offender — Doesn't stop till caught or killed. Learns by experience, tends to get better. Virtually all are male.

anthropophagy — Sexual gratification achieved through cannibalism

gerontophilia — Sexual obsession in which elderly victims are raped and murdered.

pedophilia — Having sex with children

Myths or common beliefs:

• Serial killers want to be caught. Not really. They're demonstrating their power over society by coming close to getting caught, and then showing their smarts by evading capture. They keenly desire infamy, but they would rather their fame be anonymous.

• Crime is all about people who know each other. Not any more, although family associations are statistically still the most violent.

• Witches, werewolves and vampire stories may be about actual murderers. True.

• Compulsion to kill: When circumstances didn't favor the success of their crime, perpetrators refrained from committing it. They were not compelled to act.

Who have these profilers ever actually caught?

Excellent article Andrea Campbell, very informative and concise.
Profiling, although attracting many skeptics in the early days, has earned due respect within the Law Enforcement community. Combined with advances in forensics and other investigative techniques as well as the use of all available resources.
It is astonishing to me as to the toll that profiling takes on the agents such as John Douglas, who get into the head of the unsubs thereby entering into the abyss or darkness to gain understinding of their thought patterns and behaviors.

Although profiling is a very valuable resource, many violent criminals are repeat offenders. Many Law Enforcement agencies are overwhelmed by the increasing volume of violent crimes. Due to budget cuts caused by the decrease in tax revenues, investigative backlogs are becoming more comonplace, including State and Federal DNA & Forensic labs.

Meredith Hope Emerson; one of Gary Hilton's victims' courage and heroic struggle, was the catalyst for the folling Law in GA:

'Meredith's DNA Law'

A very Valuable resource:

GA LEGISLATIVE BRIEFS: DNA bill may solve cases (04/05/2008)

The Georgia General Assembly passed legislation to make it easier for prosecutors to compare DNA samples from cold cases with other criminal investigations. The bill, requested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, was inspired by the case of Meredith Emerson, the 24-year-old hiker who was kidnapped in North Georgia on New Year's Day and later killed by Gary Michael Hilton. Hilton was sentenced to life in prison for the killing and was indicted in February in the slaying of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, whose body was found decapitated in a north Florida forest. Under state law, the GBI was barred from releasing DNA evidence in the Hilton case to law enforcement agencies in other states. The statute only allows for the release of DNA evidence once a suspect is convicted. Senate Bill 430, which passed the House 103-50, would allow prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to use DNA evidence, including samples collected from suspects arrested but never convicted of a crime. Opponents of the legislation argued that the measure would give criminal investigators and civil attorneys unrestricted access to DNA evidence from misdemeanor offenders, such as shoplifters and reckless drivers...

Note Florida, and aproximately 35 other states have followed suit, passing similar Laws, since GMH & Associates' Tragic 'Trail of Terror'...

re: signature — What the perpetrator has to do to fulfill himself; 'it doesn't change'.

Gary Michael Hilton, was an anomaly and was a Copy Cat of many Serial Killers of past. I am confident that his MO and Signature morphed due to this.
He employed forensics, police strategies & procedures, jurisdictional boundaries and communication issues of LE, as well as hunting schedules to remain stealth for decades.

Irony:
Bundy worked on the re-election campaign of Washington's Republican Governor Dan Evans. Evans was elected and he appointed Bundy to the 'Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Committee'.

Andrea Campbell,
Gary Hilton is awaiting a death penalty trial in Leon county, FL, for the tragic murder of Cheryl Dunlap. Is the strategy used to identify Gary Ridgeway's victims in Washington State, being employed in Florida to reveal GMH & associates' many, many victims?

Shthar, I am sure there are many unsubs that were brought to Justice with the support of profilers. Here's one:

The Crime Library - Robert Hansen; ^ ExploreNorth - Robert Hansen, A Serial Killer in Alaska; ^ Portraits of Serial Killers - Robert Hansen ...

************************************
WE TV; FBI Files, tonight was about Robert Hansen: The Alaskan Serial Killer, that I am confident Gary M. Hilton, based the 1994 Movie; 'Deadly Run.' The documentary went into more detail than is available on the net, and involved actual investigators that worked the case.
**************************************
Snipet from John Douglas; FBI Profiler on the Hansen: Serial Killer case:http://www.francesfarmersrevenge.com/stuff/serialkillers/profiling.htm
Hunting the Hunter
I began to get an idea of how Hansen operated, and it gave me a cold, sick feeling in my stomach. It seemed clear to me that he was definitely the killer, but he wasn't simply killing these women. I believed he was releasing them into the woods and then hunting them down like animals—and this proved to be the case....

We gave our assessment to the authorities, and they were able to get a search warrant. Hansen's rifle, which matched the bullets that killed the four women, was found at his home, along with some cheap jewelry, ID cards, and other items taken from them. There was also a sort of "journal," an aviation map marked with the locations of his victims' bodies.

Confronted with the evidence, Hansen confessed.
****************************************
Agent John Douglas profiled Hansen to a tee. He had pegged him with a studder or lisp, as an independent business owner, with a family. Hansen owned a bake shop where LE frequented(pastries) and was a pillar of the community.
Although one of his victims escaped and went to police, Hansen was able to persuade them that the accusation was false. The Anchorage PD closed the case by order of the Chief. The Alaska State Patrol had an active Serial Killer investigation in progress at the time....
I am confident that GMH, based the 'Deadly Run' movie, on Hansen's trail of terror, using his mo and signature of hunting his prey in the Wilderness, as a template. http://www.wctv.tv/home/headlines/16683281.html ) on Hansen's Trail of Terror. Robert Christian Hansen, was convicted for the murder of only 4 women, which most were prostitutes, but admitted to over 33 victims in Alaska. He was originally from Iowa, and LE was confident that he had many victims, before moving to Alaska.
Hansen was an arsonist and mirrored many of GMH's personality traits.
Their were many, many parallels to GMH. In fact you could switch names in the documentary and it would have been virtually identical to GMH's trail of Terror, except GMH, had no victim profile.
He began killing prostitutes around 1980. After paying for their services, he would kidnap and rape them; he would then fly them out to his cabin in the Knik River Valley in his private plane and stalk and kill them with a hunting knife and a .223-caliber Ruger Mini-14 rifle.
Said he would toy with his prey for days once reaching the Wilderness and then hunt them. Although he would vary his methods of abduction, he would handcuff them as soon as he put them in the vehicle, then pull a pistol on them. Said that if they tried to alert help, that he would kill/shoot them and the rescuer.(sound familiar?)
Something interesting from the Behavioral Science Unit/FBI; the Trophys/souveneirs could be any personal item of the victims; clothing, jewelry, or even Dr. Licenses. They are kept to relive the evil acts in the future.

Actually, Douglas didn't actually profile Hansen before he was on police radar. He was already a suspect and the police asked what he thought about him being the guy and Douglas then analyzed his behavior. And he already knew he had a lisp, so that wasn't an amazing guess (which would be only a lucky guess because you cannot discern a lisp from a man's behaviors; you need a witness to say the guy has a lisp). So, profiling didn't identify Hansen, the cops did. However, the analysis of his behavior could have been helpful in the continuing investigation and prosecution.

Wolfscratch said...

Pat Brown, thanks for your reply. I stand corrected.
Pat, in your opinion, why are Criminal Profilers distancing themselves from providing information and profiles on Gary Michael Hilton?
Do you think that he was a petty driftert that began his trail of terror in Oct 2007 with John & Irene Bryant?
Your expert opinion would be apreciated.

Re: Who have these profilers ever actually caught?

FBI BAU Special Agent/Profiler Jud Ray, was instrumental in providing an accurate profile of the unsub in the gruesome rapes and murders of Nancy Newman and her two young daughters
in Anchorage, Alaska in March 1987.
Although a probable suspect was being honed in on by LE, SA Jud Rays' profile eliminated him and directed them to the arrest and proscecution of the actual killer Kirby Anthoney; Nancy Newmans' nephew.

Hunter's have found remains all over these Appalacian Mountains and beyond. A Lieutenant with Union Co. Sheriffs Office, that participated in the Meredith Hope Emerson Investigation said, we have located three of GMH's campsites in our county alone and there are victims clothes scattered all over these mountains and we will never know who they all belong to."
Due to an antiquated State Law. Gary Michael Hilton's DNA and time line wasn't available until after he was convicted in GA for the tragic abduction, rape, murder, mutilation, and decapitation of Meredith Hope Emerson. This is the primary reason for taking the Death Penalty off the table. 'Merediths' DNA Law' was swiftly enacted by the State Legislature, due to this tragedy. GMH, was a Stealth Predator; identity unknown; oblivious to Law Enforcement and the Justice System, yet preying on unsuspecting innocent victims for over four decades.

From a GBI agent, "when GMH's DNA came back from the lab, in less than 24 hours after conviction, 'Cold Case' Detectives from every adjacent state were waiting for it."

Although it has been almost two years, the test results from the remains of victims found, has not been shared with the public by LE or the Justice System via the media.

The truth is an indictment of Law Enforcement and the Justice Department, IMO. If GMH & Associates have been doing his evil deeds for decades, which I am confident to be true, many innocent people were suspected, arrested, indicted, convicted, and incarcerated due to the stranger abductions and relying on circumstantial evidence to prosecute, whatever the cost.

It is virtually impossible to undo the slamming of a judges gavel... If it was possible, the resulting sound would be 'Silence'...
The silence is deafening in GMH & Associates Trail of Terror...

'GARY MICHAEL HILTON: HANNIBAL LECTURE OF THE 20TH & 21ST CENTURY'

I am confident that the discovery of the unusually high volume of women vanishing in the southeast was due to the establishment of VICAP in the mid 1980s.

With new techinlogy and leadership within the FBI, the BSU, took on a very important role in major investigations and were no longer considered witchcraft, or voodoo investigative techniques. Although housed 60' underground, to protect them from the light, their profiling techniques proved to be very accurate.

Since the BSU is the unit which is brought in to assist when a serial killer is preying in an area, yet illusive or stealth, oblivious to LE, as was Gary Michael Hilton & Associates.

The most prolific Serial Killer of the 20th & 21st Century; GMH, with extensive knowlege of forensics, police strategies and procedures, military trained and disciplined, made a mockery of normal LE Agencies. This is due to the lack of expertise dealing with SKs as well as the targeted victims being strangers. GMH, changed his MO, signature, victim profile, as well as copycating the exact style as other Serial Killers, while adding a tryst of his own unique creativity. GMH, honed his predator techniques, building confidence escalating to the point of taunting his expertise.

I am confident that GMH, although very intelligent didn't acomplish this alone. He had sidekicks as well as enablers. GMH, did not have the means to skirt the Justice System, time and time again without assistance.

The profiling process consists of several steps. Some of these steps are:

evaluation of the criminal act.

the specifics of the crime scene or scenes.

analysis of the victim, or victims, if located.

evaluation of the criminal reports of the local LE Agency conducting the preliminary investigation.

evaluation of ME or coroners autopsy report.

develop a profile with critical offender characteristics

When conducting an interview or profiling an unidentified suspect, the principle relied on is that behavior reflects personality. GMH, was a master of emulation which presented unique problems with identifying his personality traits. It would be interesting to see the profile prepared for the suspect(GMH) before his capture. I am convinced that one of the primary reasons that the expert profilers, that are usually very vocal in the media, have been silent is that GMH, fits no previous profiles....he is an anomally.

In GMH's interview of 01/07/08, there is a reason for his answers, as there was a reason for the specific questions asked by the GBI...Although the interview was plagued with lies by GMH, a treasure trove of information will be garnered from his responses.

Although there are numerous lies which will be obvious under scrutiny, the one that stands out the most is when he denied that he raped MHE. Once the truth was pried out of him. He was how many times. GMH, responded, "once". He knew that the number of rapes would be impossible to detect by LE...

When I was a young man, a friend taught me the ancient art of dowsing, and after a time, I became something of a practitioner myself, finding water underground as a kind of parlor trick for friends. It might seem odd that a man so rooted in grim reality would take an interest in something so ethereal. In fact, I’m fascinated by the unseen forces at play in the lives of human beings.

My job has been to try to stop human predators before they kill again, and after studying them so closely over so many years, to me their traits seem clearly recognizable.
Evil is more than a vague notion. It is an entity, and it is manifest on the earth. It has reflexes and intuition, senses vulnerability, and changes its form to adapt to its surroundings. Those who do not believe the Devil walks this earth have not seen the things that I have seen.

Evil is not a discrete entity that springs forth fully formed. It is born in the mind, takes root there as fantasy, and prospers when normal human restraint can no longer contain it. I have seen it devour the personalities of men like Richard Speck, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy, turning them into blank-faced sociopaths who clearly know right from wrong, but choose, time and again, to follow their own base urges, with complete disregard for the terrible human suffering they cause.
I believe that every act of homicide causes a slight unbalancing in the world, and that it diminishes life’s universal equation. In the interest of justice, it is imperative that someone try to right that imbalance. But the task of fighting evil can take a terrible toll on the people who are charged with it. It can cost them their families, their equilibrium, their capacity for joy.

Let`s put our detective caps on. And for that, let`s go to Pat Brown, criminal profiler and author of "Killing for Sport." As we hear all of this, let`s try to just use deductive reasoning. Either she got lost or something untoward happened to her. Those are two main possibilities. But given that all of this is happening on a mountain, how possible is it for somebody -- and we`re speaking hypothetically -- somebody, anybody to take a person against their will down a mountain?

PAT BROWN, CRIMINAL PROFILER: Well, Jane, I think, first of all, unfortunately, I don`t think it sounds too good, like she just got lost. It does sound like this is probably something untoward happened out there on the mountain.

One thing about serial killers and hiking trails is they tend to like to hang around the trailheads and watch the women come and go. They usually tend to be lazy. They don`t usually like to go more than a mile just to go in and find somebody who`s alone. So I`m looking at this one man who`s a suspect, and he`s...

Agent John Douglas profiled Hansen to a tee. He had pegged him with a studder or lisp, as an independent business owner, with a family. Hansen owned a bake shop where LE frequented(pastries) and was a pillar of the community.

Actually Pat Brown, John Douglas did predict that Robert Hansen: Alaskan Serial Killer, had a lisp in his original profile...

Please refer to: Serial Killers: Profiling the Criminal Mind: 'A & E' - Disc 1 - 1994 (Ironically the same year the 'Deadly Run Movie' was filmed)...

After reading an article in Psychology Today about criminal profiling, the FBI BSU/BAU was contacted by the Alaskan State Trooper Detective Glenn Flothe, requesting assistance after being denied a search warrant for lack of probable cause. Deective Flothe began telling FBI Profiler Roy Hazelwood about Robert Hansen. Hazelwood said, "No, No, No"! Detective Flothe was advised by Hazelwood, not to give information pertaining to the suspect, only the victims and the specifics of the investigation. (An Artist is revealed by reviewing his Artwork)...
In the A & E documentary Detective Flothe states that John Douglas and Roy Hazelwood profiled Robert Hansen, and Douglas stipulated that the suspect would most likely have a studder...

Criminal Behavior Profiling is not based on lucky guesses, but many years of research, interviews on many Serial Killers prior, crime scene analysis, deductive reasoning, common sense, as well as the ability to peel away the mask and enter the mind of those beyond evil...

FYI: John Douglas, predicted to the day that Atlanta, GA: Serial Killer Wayne Williams, would fake a medical emergency to gain sympathy from the jury during his trial. Williams complained of chest pains and was rushed to Grady Hospital, where Doctors found no signs of a heart condition...
John Douglas, advised the DA in the Larry Gene Bell, Death Penalty Trial, for the Murder of Sherry Faye smith, that Bell would cause an outburst or disturbance in the courtroom on the first day. To the Prosecutors amazement, Bell acted out Douglas's prediction...
Bell was executed in 1996....
